ABOUT ELLE PHOTOGRAPHS

As a photographer and ethnographer, Lauren “Elle” Stevenson focuses her lens on moments that serve as portals, taking us from one way of being to another. For more than two decades, she has documented the practice of performing artists who intentionally create these kinds of portals in their work to spark change and build community. Her photographs bear witness to the ways their performances move us to see, feel, and understand the world in new ways. They also illuminate seldom-seen moments in the creative process through which artists forge these transformative possibilities.

With a lens trained on creative practice, Elle’s photographs also explore the contexts in which she is most intentionally creating her experience of the world. This has primarily included traveling when she finds she is most awake to the potential of even the smallest in-between moments. More recently, as a mother, she has begun to explore creativity in parenting and the complete presence that is required to immerse with her children in art and play.
